The DogMother
Well, I finally did something that I’ve been wanting to do for the longest time! I adopted a dog! I kept thinking it was never the right time for a dog. To give you some context, years ago I went through a really bad breakup and right afterwards I got a dog. One reason I did it was that my ex told me I couldn’t handle a dog (I got him out of spite) and also I was super depressed. My first dog Krypto was a Weimaraner who at one years old was already 61 pounds. I will say that Krypto saved my life by giving me a reason to get out of bed every morning. But let’s be honest, getting a puppy because you are depressed is a BAD idea. Eventually I had to give him up as I couldn’t provide the life he deserved. Fast forward to now. I had been hesitating to get a dog because I felt that apartment life was no place for a dog. Then in June I finally decided it was the right time! Everyone meet Trekker!!
She’s the cutest thing.
Trekker is a midsize F1B Labradoodle puppy who should grow to about 30 pounds. If you aren’t familiar with Labradoodles, basically a Poodle mates with Labrador Retriever. I named her Trekker after my two favorite things: SPACE and TRAVEL. I really thought everything through before making this huge decision. I did buy her from a reputable breeder. Even though she is not from a shelter, I still consider her an adoption. I chose her breed specifically because Labradoodles are 1) emotional support dogs and 2) hypoallergenic. I did search several shelters for this breed but had no luck so I went with contacting a breeder. In my opinion, not every breeder is bad and people should not shame pet owners who do not get their pets from shelters. You never know someone’s situation and should not assume.
Apartment Life
My first hurdle was making sure that Trekker was comfortable in my apartment. I wanted to make sure that she had her own space. I bought her a play pen from Clearly Loved Pets that she could be in while I went to work and it’s just perfect for us. I will admit that it was a bit pricey but so worth the money. Buying the play pen and a rug from Ruggable turned out to be the perfect combination. The rug is my #1 puppy accessory because you can put it in the washer and dryer!
She was so tiny when I first brought her home that I had to buy a crate with divider that she could sleep in at night. The smaller space helps with potty training and when she’s bigger, I’ll be able to remove the divider.
Doodle Mom
Can you tell I’m super excited to be a ‘Doodle Mom’?!? Labradoodles have high energy, are very smart, and need to be stimulated BUT they are mild mannered if their brains are constantly working.
Labradoodles are super sweet. Trekker wants to be friends with everybody! On our walks she greets every person that passes by and begs for attention. I think its the cutest thing.
Something to think about: Doodles have really sensitive stomach’s so watch out when introducing new foods and treats. As a Dog Mom, it’s a battle considering they like to eat EVERYTHING. On walks she always trying to eat whatever we pass by (even if its poop ugh!) I have to watch her every move! I thought it was just a puppy characteristic but the vet said it has to do with her breed. Also, Trekker hates riding in the car. We have practiced and practiced and she is learning to cope with the car ride. But….. it’s not her favorite!
Even though Doodles are hypoallergenic and don’t really shed, it doesn’t mean they don’t shed. I still have to make sure to vacuum regularly or I will notice small hairballs around. She gets a bath and her teeth brushed weekly. I schedule a professional grooming every month because her hair grows fast and her nails also get long and sharp. Since her hair can become long and wavy, grooming also helps to prevent matting.
So Worth It!
This month we’ll be officially reaching our 3 month mark together and I’m still so happy that I chose Trekker. I love her sooooo much. She makes my days brighter and I can’t wait to get home and play with her.
My favorite thing about Trekker is that she is always happy and playful. It seems like she never has a bad day. Her coat is REALLY soft and I call her my personal ‘teddy bear’. She is just the cutest!
I am happy to give advice to anyone who is considering adopting a dog. It is the best experience that you will cherish forever! You can follow Trekker on her Instagram: @trekkerthedoodle
