I am just back from London and I had the most wonderful time! I am happy to say that I felt fully prepared for my trip. The first time I traveled to Europe, I was not aware of all of the items that I should have brought along. My first European experience could have been a lot more comfortable if I had just remembered to bring a few essential items! This second time around was much better and I believe everyone can benefit from this list I have created!
My trip to London was everything I dreamed it would be and more! I get a lot of questions about what it takes to travel alone. The truth is that I really like traveling by myself because I have the freedom to spend more time at certain places and just follow my heart instead of a scheduled itinerary. The main advice I would give if you decide to travel alone is to be prepared! Today I’m sharing my recommended packing list. Whether you are traveling alone or not, these items definitely come in handy!
Passport
The most important item to remember when traveling is your Passport! When I am traveling, I’m never without my passport. I don’t even leave it in the hotel room when I’m out and about. Most of the time when I am out of the country, my Passport is in a pouch underneath my shirt or close to me in my purse. In the extreme case of a lost or stolen Passport, remember to always leave a copy of your Passport with a friend or family member so that you are able to get back home!
Zero Grid Pouch
My Zero Grid Pouch is one of the most secure travel items that I own. It is meant to be worn around your neck but you can also store it in a bag or purse. The pouch is great for carrying your Passport, bank cards, and hotel room keys. If it is worn around the neck, the pouch fits right underneath your shirt for security purposes. It is also RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) scan proof! This means that no one can use an RFID device to scan your bank cards (and basically steal your money) while they are in your possession!
Soundproof Headphones
I used to believe that regular headphones would work while traveling but I learned my lesson on this last trip! I really wanted to get some rest on the way to London so that my body would adapt to the time change faster. I was able to get some sleep…mostly. But, there was an instance where a couple was talking so loud and I kept waking up. Soundproof headphones would have been perfect in that situation. Also, on the plane ride back, I wanted to watch movies. (Keep in mind, I like to sit near the wing of the plane.) I realized that I had to use subtitles because no matter how much I increased the volume, the noise from the plane’s engine was too loud to hear anything!
Universal Adaptor
You may not realize it, but the electric plugs in other countries may not be the same as your home country. This means that you won’t be able to do things like charge your phone or plug in your hair dryer without the right plug. You either have to bring the right appliances that are made for that country or you will need to buy a Universal Adaptor. I suggest just buying a Universal Adaptor so that you don’t have to buy new appliances or chargers. Also keep in mind that the voltage is different in other countries as well! I once blew out an adaptor because it was not made for the voltage in Spain!
Memory Foam Neck Pillow
If I take an international flight, the flight crew will normally supply the passengers with a pillow and blanket for the long ride. I like to bring along my Memory Foam Neck Pillow because the material in the pillows that they supply is not that great. Think about it, their pillows are meant to be used once and then tossed out! I suggest a memory foam pillow because it’s so comfortable and after the plane ride, you can flatten it to fit right back into your suitcase.
Comfortable Shoes
I don’t know about you, but when I travel I love to explore the sights! Even one day at the museum will do a lot of damage to your feet if the right shoes are not worn! The best shoes to buy are light and comfy! I love to wear my Nike Roshe One shoes because they don’t weigh much (great for airport weight restrictions) and they are incredibly comfortable to wear! Plus they are very affordable at $75!
Whistle
When you are traveling you should always be mindful about your safety! I travel alone regularly and I am always watchful of my surroundings. I keep a whistle around my neck or in my purse in the extreme case that I need to call for help.
Flashlight Stun Gun
This is one of my favorite items that I pack! It’s a stun gun disguised as a flashlight! The Stun Gun definitely works as a flashlight and has three different settings. If you turn on the switch at the base, it transforms into a stun gun. My uncle suggested that I use it when he realized I was traveling alone to many places. I was actually really scared to carry it at first but as long as it is packed in my checked luggage, there have been no problems with airport security. Now, I can’t take a trip without it! Of course I have never had to use it but I feel so safe knowing I have it with me!
Book
I love reading! I usually finish books when I am traveling. It’s easy to breeze through one while waiting for a departure, during a long layover, or on a long flight. Also, the wifi can cut out when traveling on a subway or train and I find that those are the perfect times to get some reading done!
Umbrella
Going to London you must remember one thing – it rains alot! I was so lucky on my trip because it rained only ONE day the entire time I was there! That usually doesn’t happen. It doesn’t matter where you go, it is always a great idea to travel with an umbrella.
Sunglasses
I can’t go anywhere without carrying the perfect sunnies! They are great for the beach and pretty much any walking adventure where I plan to be out and about all day long. They’re also great for Instagram photos. 😉
Portable Weight Scale
My Sharper Image Portable weight scale was a gift from my dad and I simply love it! Before I get to the airport, I already know if my bag will pass the weight restrictions!
External Battery
Packing my Mophie External Battery is a must-do when traveling. Using a maps app accompanied by Instagram sharing and pictures can drain your battery. For my security, if I travel alone my phone has to stay on the entire time.
Waterproof Coat
I remember the first time I every traveled to Europe. I was on my way to Germany to visit my parents and wore a coat made of cotton. Boy was that a mistake! I was freezing the entire time because my coat wasn’t moisture resistant. I learned my lesson! I found the perfect Laundry Down Puffer Jacket that was perfect for my trip!! I was even hot sometimes and had to take it off. That NEVER happens. I loooooove my waterproof coat!
Miscellaneous
Other important things to remember: if you plan to take public transportation, it really helps to download the city app before so that you can learn how to maneuver. Any itineraries you can plan ahead will save so much time when you get there! Look at reviews from tourists before traveling to places you want to visit. And most importantly… bring a good attitude! Sometimes you encounter unexpected things when traveling and you just have to go with the flow! Happy traveling!
